Just a sneak peek of two of the paintings I am making for The Layman Group’s new office in downtown auburn. Ive transitioned somewhat away from the pure portraiture of the past few months, to something a little more graphic heavy. The show is tomorrow, and I have tons to do!
Day one, working on commission. Things are looking rather good considering this is the first layer of paint. Need to sit back a while and let it stiffen up before I go further.
Update on another commission. A few weeks back I posted a picture of this painting, with the girl not painted in at all yet. Well, here it is painted in. I am waiting on it to dry so that I can modify some things.
Edit: I really am hating a great deal about this painting so far. Totally out of my realm, and… fuck I’ll just say it. I. DONT. DO. FLOWERS.

Some of what is happening in my studio.

I am painting a lot of large work. Before grad school started, the largest work I was making at the time was about 2x5 feet. Anything larger was impractical to paint since I didn’t have that sort of space after graduating from Auburn. Now that I have space, walls (that I now wish were even taller) and storage, I feel I am only limited by my ambition to paint. So here are a few pics of stuff still in progress.

Some of the stuff closely adheres to the work I did before, while other things, like the Chrome skull painting, are more of an experimentation with imagery. Seeing how these different sorts of images play in context to the rest of my body of work.

New painting I started today, Its going WAY faster than I was expecting. It will probably only take another day or two. I am on this kick of painting in monochrome.
I have a studio visit with Mathew Cerletty on monday and I want to have a lot of new stuff that represents what I am interested in right now.
Detail of a painting I started two days ago. It is the biggest painting I have attempted yet, 7’ wide, 9’ high. It’s so big that I cant even paint it upright in my studio. The painting will remain sideways until its done.
I think this size is good for me, I can work on just on thing a day, and I don’t feel overwhelmed like I do with smaller paintings. Yesterday I painted in the scarf, today it will be either his head or the watch and writsbands on his hands.
Saturday I go up to NYC for the armory show, and show in the old Dia Foundation building. Lots of artsyness happing this week.
New work in progress. A great deal is left to be painted, most notable the mouth and the drip running up his face yet.  Just a tiny bit smaller than the last one. I still don’t know what I am naming this series, which bothers me. I am always so certain with my paintings.
